A familiar voice on a Friday (at last)

Paul Carrack

Untitled

I am quite certain that all of you have heard the song “How long (has this been going on)”

Here is another version featuring some of The Eagles…

It was a staple of the mid 1970’s on FM radio

But who sings it and why does the voice seem to pop up in all kids of songs?

The answer?

The great Paul Carrack…once the lead singer and writer for ACE and subsequently a singer for Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics

Bio…
Paul Melvyn Carrack (born 22 April 1951) is an English singer, songwriter and musician who has recorded as both a solo artist and as a member of several popular bands. The BBC has called Carrack “The Man with the Golden Voice”, and described him as a “national treasure.”[1] Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic characterised him as “perhaps the best blue-eyed soul singer the [pub rock] scene produced.”[2]
Carrack rose to prominence in the mid 1970s as the frontman and principal songwriter of Ace, and gained further recognition for his work as a solo artist and for his tenures as a member of Roxy Music, Squeeze and Roger Waters’ backing group, The Bleeding Heart Band, intermittently handling lead vocals on Squeeze and Waters recordings. From the mid 1980s to the late 1990s, he enjoyed perhaps his greatest success as the co-frontman (with Paul Young) and a songwriter for Mike + The Mechanics; following Young’s death in 2000, Carrack served as the band’s sole lead vocalist until his departure in 2004. He maintains an active solo career to the present day.
Carrack sang some of his affiliated bands’ best-known hits, including Ace’s “How Long?”; Squeeze’s “Tempted”; and Mike + The Mechanics’ “Silent Running”, “The Living Years” and “Over My Shoulder”. He also performed lead vocals on tracks from the Roger Waters albums Radio K.A.O.S. and The Wall – Live in Berlin, and achieved a major solo hit with “Don’t Shed a Tear”. Carrack’s songs have been recorded by artists such as the Eagles, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Michael McDonald and Jools Holland,[3] and he has served as a session and/or touring musician for the likes of Elton John, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, The Pretenders and The Smiths

Here is Paul singing lead on the iconic hit from 1981…Tempted (by the fruit of another)

Speaking of great voices…how about Paul Young?!

Untitled

Paul Antony Young[1][2] (born 17 January 1956)[3][4] is an English rock and pop musician. Formerly the frontman of the short-lived bands Kat Kool & The Kool Cats, Streetband and Q-Tips, his following solo success turned him into a 1980s teenage pop idol. He was famous for hit singles such as “Love of the Common People”, “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)”, “Come Back and Stay”, “Everytime You Go Away” and “Oh Girl”. His debut album No Parlez turned him into a household name.[5] Since the mid-1980s he has had international success, along with his backing band Los Pacaminos.

In 1985 he appeared at Geldof and Ure’s next charity convention Live Aid,[6] where he appeared at the London Wembley Stadium performing the Band Aid hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, and his own hits “Come Back and Stay”, “That’s The Way Love Is” and “Everytime You Go Away”, with Alison Moyet joining him on-stage to perform “That’s The Way Love Is”.[7] At the 1985 Brit Awards, Young received the award for Best British Male.[8]
In the past decade, Young has released very little new material, but has continued to tour in different parts of the world.[9]

MERRY CHRISTMAS to Everyone!

The best and last Game Plan of 2012!

20121221-1

Most rock fans assume that all Christmas music is terrible. They’re mostly right, but every once in a while a Christmas miracle happens — and a great holiday song gets produced. Some of the best examples come from 1963’s Phil Spector’s Christmas Album. It had the horrible fate of coming out the exact day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated, so very few people were looking to sing along to “Frosty The Snowman” — but they missed out on a Wall of Sound masterpiece that’s one of Spector’s most satisfying LP’s. Here’s a look and listen at 15 of the greatest Christmas songs ever.

Band Aid, “Do They Know It’s Christmas”

In 1984 Bob Geldof and Midge Ure had much of British rock elite come together to record a Christmas song to aid famine relief in Ethiopia. The one-time-only supergroup was comprised of Bono, Phil Collins, Boy George, Sting, George Michael and many others. The song was a massive hit and gave birth to Live Aid the next year, though 20 years later people are still puzzling over Bono’s line, “Tonight thank God it’s them instead of you.”

Seventy years ago Dec. 7, the nation was shocked by the news from Pearl Harbor, a place many Americans had never heard of before. They had been assured by aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, a leader of the isolationist, anti-war movement, that “the Japanese had such bad eyesight that they could not fly aircraft effectively.”

Yet without declaring war, Japan had launched a massive air attack on the ill-prepared U.S. naval forces in Hawaii. The damage — 2,402 Americans killed, four battleships sunk, 188 aircraft destroyed — wouldn’t be known publicly for weeks.

Christmas special alert… DECEMBER 11 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network you can see Santa Claus is Comin’ to town.

One of the greatest of the classic 1960s/1970’s animated Christmas specials. There are many memorable songs and lines in this holiday staple.

Produced by Rankin & Bass in 1970…The Mailman (Voiced by Fred Astaire) decides to answer some of the most common questions about Santa Claus, and tells us about a small baby named Kris (voiced by Mickey Rooney) who was left on the doorstep of the Kringle family (toymakers). When Kris grew up, he wanted to deliver toys to the children of Sombertown. But its Burgermeister (Herr Meisterburger) is too mean to let that happen. And to make things worse, there’s an evil wizard named Winter (voiced by the great Keenan Wynn) who lives between the Kringles and Sombertown, but Kris manages to melt Winter’s heart (as well as Jessica the attractive schoolteacher’s) and deliver his toys.
